COLECO 5380 The S-Slot

A Short history of a Classic Canadian Table Hockey Game

Where did it start?

Eagle toys first came out with the S-slot pattern that we know as the Coleco 5380 slot pattern.
This was in the early 1960s and there were 2 models from Eagle. There was the NHL Stanley Cup game which was modeled after the 1967 Stanley Cup featuring the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. It also came with a play by play microphone we could all pretend we were Foster Hewitt in the Gondola.

It featured plastic sticks on metal men, used the diamond puck (shorthand < >) and 5” wide nets. There was a real electric goal light on a triangular base behind the net and it had a Left Hand center as you can see in the picture.

The model that preceded this was called the Eagle 550 (551 in the USA) featuring the original S-slot pattern, but this was in the days where metal was cheaper, so this game had metal legs, 2 ½” high metal boards to keep the puck in. The red light in this game was on a 2” plastic post which you inserted behind the net.

This game had a Left Hand Center, as you can see in the picture. In fact neither game had the capability of having a Right Hand center because that’s where they put the eject lever to kick the puck out.

In the late 1960s, Eagle’s last S-slot game was the 5330 which featured the smaller 3 7/8” nets for the first time. They removed the red light post and created the infamous “dead zone” net behind where neither defenseman could reach the puck. However, this allowed the behind the net pass. This game also introduced the plastic goal cup that had 3 functions – it kicked the puck out, had a mechanical red light that pushed up when a goal was scored (leading to the “in and out” is no goal rule), and controlled the left right movement of the goalie using a unique plastic pivot. For the first time, the flat metal men that were later deemed “too dangerous” for kids to play with by over zealous parents and toy safety boards made their appearance.

The 5380 is born!

This was the game and the slot pattern that gave birth to our Coleco 5380 games, when the Connecticut Leather Company – COLECO bought out Montreal’s Eagle toys.

Coleco was into cost savings from the very beginning and promptly abandoned the metal frame and manufactured the games with the red plastic control boards, and used everything else from the 5330. This game was marketed as the Coleco 5380. It, too had a Left Center and introduced the original Coleco solid puck (shorthand [ ]).

In the early 1970s, Coleco decided to introduce a game with the LMOP (last minute of play) player on the bigger straight slot version of the game known as the 5340. They introduced the same concept on the 5380 and used a new mold for the control panel that had a Left Hand center and hole on the right side of the goalie with a fixed rod that was used for the LMOP player. It became pretty obvious that the LMOP player didn’t do much to improve the game and, in fact, it mostly blocked desperate shots when you were trying to tie the game up. It was quickly abandoned. The picture shows location of this player who even had a special post. This was a game that took 17 factory workers to make!

So the LMOP idea was abandoned but the hole on the right hand side was never patched up in the mold , while control panels colors changed from red, to blue (unlicensed NHL players), and then to the orange. The centers were always on the left. But some players when replacing broken rods realized that they could put the center rod on the right hand side using the LMOP hole, and brought this to the attention of Coleco.

When Coleco made the final color switch to black plastic in the early 1980s, they introduced the fantastic 4 ¼” wider nets, the hollow Coleco puck (shorthand -) and the “Swiss cheese” players that had holes in them to, you guessed it, save money! They marketed the Left Hand center games in Ontario and Quebec and most Eastern Canada, and the Right Handed center games in the USA and Western Canada, where new players had no preference or fixed ideas of of where the center “should” be.

That decision divided the table hockey community and today, almost all new players and leagues use the Right Hand center. However, the game was designed with a Left Hand center and even today, if you bring both centers to the middle, in the RH center game, both players cannot advance into the circle, who ever gets there first will block out the other center. IThe center slot curves to the right. When you play LH center there is no such interference. For the RH center to do this, the curve will have to be a mirror image going left. There is only one original Coleco 5380 “bandit” game that has this slot pattern which was never released to the public.

So which one is better – the Left Hand or the Right Hand center?

1) When you play a LH center, you are playing the game as it was designed to be played.

It allows both centers to come into the faceoff circle without any interference. This happens less easily in the RH center game, because slot curves the opposite way to avoid interference.

2) You can play the goalie and the centre with the same hand.

The distance between the LH hole and the goalie rod lets you play goalie and centre with one hand. Some players have developed a fancy flick of the thumb save to rob their opponents of a sure goal. You just cannot do this with a RH center because of the distance from the goalie rods and RH hole on the control panel.

Today, most newer players and some of the Coleco community will say that the LH center interferes with their ability to play the goalie. Some older players will say that the LH center is better. But, they are slowly dying off.

Can both RH and LH center play on the same game?

The short answer is no. Because the rods have to cross underneath the game, the center rods start interfering with each other about 3” outside the face off circle and grind their way into the center if the other center is anywhere near the face off circle.

Birth of the Coleco 5380 Super Center Rods

In 2005, during the first Coleco Classic Cup© (The Grand Daddy of all Coleco 5380 tournaments that are now held in the USA) some players often wondered very loudly where their center was when needed! The millisecond delay in reaction time if you are used to a RH center and play a LH, or vice versa, can often cost you a goal or a clearing play.

In 2006, in Las Vegas, the 2nd Coleco Classic Cup© introduced the Super Center rods which were built so that they could let a player using a LH center to play against someone who used a RH center. Fittingly, it was Dave Kraehling of Mississauga, ON playing a LH center who beat Dr. Lou Marinoff of Monroe, NH playing a RH center in a thrilling 7 game final that was one for the ages.

Since then, the Coleco Classic Cup© players choose their LH or a RH center. It is the only tournament to do so in both USA and Canada, This tournament is held in Las Vegas in late January every year where Coleco Classic players can play their best game on the S-slot pattern . In the Southern California Table Hockey League SCTHL everyone plays with thie choice.

Who plays with LH centers?

There are only 2 tournaments played with a LH centre. They use the original rules for the Coleco 5380. The Johnny Good Guy© tournament in Brampton Ontario, is run by Peter Moulton and John Beedham usually around Easter. They played their 36th consecutive tournament this year.

The other is the Coleco Classic Cup in Las Vegas, NV which actually is the only table hockey tournament still using the original Coleco 5380 boards.

When the 5380 game was revived in Quebec, Martin Labelle, Pascal Leclerc, and Carlo Bossio all made games that could be played with LH center or RH center to allow players to be modern or play the orignal Classic style.

Who makes them?

Here are 3 people who can make a Coleco 5380 replica game:

SCTHL hopes to showcase the 5380 game in Berne, Switzerland during the IIHF World Ice Hockey Championships on May 8 and 9th during the semifinals and the finals.

Your early response is appreciated as the logistics of a Left/Right tournament are very complex. We need to determine the roster and schedule 2 weeks in advance for all possibilities so we can start and finish on time .

Your original plastic Coleco players are welcome to accompany you on this road trip and play in the Classic Cup.

At least 2 round robins will be played so plan for at least 25 games before playoffs. We will split into an A and B division with everyone having a chance to qualify for the A division playoffs. We will also have a B division champion .

We use 4.25" nets, solid plastic players, and play 5 minute games. Regulation tie games stand, and playoffs games go to OT.

1. TIME. Is Five (5) minutes, running clock. The clock stops only for:
- End of game
- Equipment failure such as broken post, rod, game
- Player called 30 second Timeout for. One timeout per player per game
- Referee called time out or adding time by Referee
- Puck leaving the ice (souvenir for the fans) if more than 5 seconds elapse

2. GOAL. Is scored (Goals from Face off count) when the Puck:
- Goes in and stays in goal cup
- Stops on the goal tender bar and is completely behind red goal line
- Rolls into the goal from anywhere

3. FREEZE. Is called by Goalie when puck is behind Goalie, stops moving in the crease, and:
- Is not fully behind red goal line
- Center’s stick cannot touch the Puck
- Is called immediately after puck stops moving (no need to wait)
- Is the Goalie’s option to make the call or not

4. NO GOAL. A goal is disallowed when:
- Puck goes in and out and stays out, play continues with no interruption
- Center pushes the Goalie but never touches the puck
- Player moves, lifts, or tilts the board and goal is scored

5. POWER PLAY. Occurs when a Player falls of the post or the control rod grip falls off.
- Fallen player or grip must remain as is until a stoppage of play
- Shorthanded player calls FREEZE after getting full possession of the puck
- Play resumes with the Player who has the Puck starting play
- If no player has the Puck, but play stops, the Face Off is at Center Ice

6. FACE OFFS. All face offs are at Center Ice. Centers must be positioned with post and stick outside the centre ice face off circle. The Puck must hit the ice first or puck will dropped again. Face Offs start the Game and OT, and continue the Game after:
- A goal, disallowed goal, or Puck leaving the ice surface
- Any major equipment failure
- Stoppages except Goalie freeze or Dead Zone Puck

7. DEAD ZONE PUCK or FREEZE. Play resumes with the puck touching the backboard at the trapezoid line. The defenseman must try to play the puck first if the puck goes in the dead zone or the goalie must haved called a FREEZE. The puck is then moved moved with ONE FINGER to the correct TRAPEZOID LINE and must touch the backboard. Left or Right side is determined by the puck location before play stops or the last man to touch the puck. Play resume with either defenseman clearing the puck. The 5 second delay of game applies for play to resume after:
- Goalie calls “FREEZE”
- Puck stopping in the Dead Zone
- Puck getting stuck in net meshing

8. TOUCHING THE PUCK IS NOT ALLOWED. EXCEPTIONS – IF the Puck is:
- Stuck under a player’s stick, then player can free the puck and continue playing
- Rolling in the corner and cannot be played, A push is allowed ...puck still rolling
- Moved to TRAPEZOID LINE after a Goalie FREEZE or DEAD ZONE PUCK
- Awarded to opposing player after a Delay of Game penalty.

9. DELAY OF GAME PENALTY. All Players must try to make a scoring play or pass within 5 seconds from the time they could have or can play the puck. This Penalty will be called when any Player takes more than 5 seconds to take a shot/pass. These Player pairs are considered to be one player for this Rule:
- Defense to Defense plays behind the net
- Goalie to Defense plays in Goal crease

If a Player does not pass/shoot within 5 seconds, the player will be warned. A second warning is the final tournament warning. Any further delay in this game or any future game will result in immediate change of possession. The Puck will be awarded to the nearest opposing player. Play continues with no face Off. This rule also applies when:
- Resuming play after a FREEZE and for Defense to start play behind the net
- Defense tries to play the Dead Zone Puck, and for resuming play behind the net
- Starting play after a Goal is allowed or disallowed

10. ILLEGAL PLAYS
- Ramming Defense against backboards to clear the puck
- Box defense placing one or both defensemen in the crease, behind the goalie
- Touching any player during the game
- Lifting, tilting, vibrating the game board or spinning players
- Bank shot into net without Puck touching (any) player - TODD KROZE RULE (in memoriam).

11. DEAD ZONE. Is the area behind the net where neither Defense player can touch the puck indicated by the red lines behind the Goal. With a DEAD ZONE PUCK:
- The Defense must go back and try to play the puck first
- The Play resumes at the TRAPEZOID LINE if nobody can touch the Puck
- The 5 second rule applies to make the call and resume play

12. TOUCHING PLAYERS IS NOT ALLOWED at any time during the game unless a shorthanded Player needs to be fixed and the shorthanded Team has possession of the Puck. If a player always fans in a particular area, equipment failure rule applies. The player can be pushed down or changed when there is a stoppage of play. If a player is touched illegally, opposing winger is automatically awarded the puck and play resumes within 5 seconds.

13. REFEREE controls the game and decisions are Final. Both players must respect Referee’s judgement. Arguing with the Referee will not be allowed. If there is no Referee, both players are expected to apply all these rules fairly. Protests can be directed to Tournament Referee. The Tournament Referee’s decision is Final.

14. PENALTY SHOT will be awarded when the opponent denies the offensive player a scoring opportunity by making an illegal move such as:
- Moving the game board when puck is in the goal crease
- Touching a moving puck in the crease without calling a FREEZE
- Blocking a shot without using a player or goalie (also known as the “crack” defense)
The penalty shot is awarded IMMEDIATELY and game time clock is stopped.

For illegal moves such as:
- Touching a player on the ice surface except pick up a fallen player - Using profane language repeatedly
- Deliberately distracting the opponent in any other way
The penalty shot is awarded AFTER A FIRST WARNING has been given.

The Center and Goalie play the Penalty Shot as follows:
1) Puck is placed Center Ice dot with the Center at the faceoff circle.
2) Goalie is positioned in the crease, and cannot be touched or moved.
3) The Clock is set at 0:05 (5 seconds) and Center says “Ready”.
4) Clock is started and Center has 5 seconds to take a shot and score

GOAL: The Puck must be fully behind the red line before buzzer sounds.

NO GOAL:
1) Any rebound unless it is off the post, then Goalie and directly into the net
2) If the Puck goes IN and OUT
3) If the Puck is banked off the boards directly into the net (TODD KROZE RULE)

15. FIVE VERY, VERY IMPORTANT RULES:
- Be a sport and Have Fun
- Talk Hockey and call the play by play
- Shake hands and the end of the game/series/Stanley Cup

16. TIE BREAK AND PLAYOFF RULES

Tie Break during League/Round Robin:
- Most Points (WIN 2, TIE 1, LOSS 0)
- Most Wins, Head to Head Wins, Lowest GA Average, Coin Toss
- Playoff Format: Best of 3: 1-1-1, Best of 5: 2-2-1, Best of 7: 2-2-1-1-1.
- Round Robin point standings determine 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7 and so on.

Playoffs:
- OT to decide winner in Playoffs
- Format: Best of 3: 1-1-1, Best of 5L 2-2-1, Best of 7: 2-2-1-1-1
- League/Round Robin decide Playoff Seeds and pairing

Finals and Semi Finals:
- The higher seed can select the game to play home games. Selection is final
- The visitor can select a game for their home games. Selection is final
- If Players play on the same board, they will switch sides for home games
